definition
noun
general, linguistics, grammar

A statement of the precise meaning or significance of something, such as the definition of a concept represented by a term (a word or phrase).

Additional Information:

A definition should state WHAT something is, not how it’s used, who owns or uses it, why it’s used, when it’s used, etc.  The who, when, why, and how are important pieces of information, but they are NOT part of the definition of something.

A definition should be written similar to definitions of words and phrases found in Webster’s Dictionary.  In many data models, additional information is frequently added for clarification, such as what something is not.  However, the primary words used to state the definition should be short and concise.  Also, the definitions of concepts and entities or classes should be written as classification definitions.
