"We were interested to read the article by Khatami et al. which provides an overview of the central nervous system (CNS) side effects of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination (SC2V), the underlying pathophysiology and the diagnosis and treatment of these side effects. CNS side effects discussed included headache, optic neuritis, stroke, seizure, multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), encephalitis, delirium, acute transverse myelitis and myalgia...
... [T]he spectrum of CNS side effects is much broader than described in the index review. In addition to stroke, encephalitis, epilepsy, demyelinating diseases such as ADEM, optic neuritis, or multiple sclerosis, delirium and transverse myelitis, neurological side effects after SC2V can also manifest as cerebral vasculitis, giant cell arteritis, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, pituitary apoplexy, Susac syndrome, rhombencephalitis, cerebellitis, AHLE [acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis], AHNE/ANE [acute hemorrhagic necrotizing enterocolitis/acute necrotizing encephalopathy], AHEM [acute hemorrhagic encephalomyelitis}, multifocal necrotizing encephalitis, aseptic meningitis, cerebral isolated syndrome NMO [neuromyelitis optica] spectrum disorders, MOGAD [myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease], opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome, narcolepsy, Tolosa-Hunt syndrome, cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum, PRES [posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome], pontine myelinolysis, hypophysitis, ACTH deficiency, tremor and idiopathic intracranial hypertension...
We also disagree with the statement in the introduction that severe complications of SC2V are rare. Severe and long-term complications of SC2V are more common than assumed. Their apparent rarity may be due to symptoms being misinterpreted as unrelated to SC2V or that these side effects are not always recorded or publicized...
Neurological side effects of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination are common and can be severe and even fatal."
