Yet those purchases were largely responsible for the deterioration of a company once regarded as a model of social responsibility into a symbol of unreliability with a seemingly endless string of scandals involving tainted and deficient products as well as improper marketing of opioids. Those scandals have forced the company to pay billions of dollars in civil settlements and criminal fines."
